MIA for a bit

I just wanted to pop in to let you all know I will be MIA until sometime next week. With the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, I am planning on spending as much time as possible with family that we are visiting. See you soon! And have a fabulous Thanksgiving! There is so much to be grateful for!

Marcel the Shell With Shoes On is back!

Here is some random cuteness for your day! Marcel is super cute!

If you haven't seen the first video, I posted about it here.

Wear I Work - Outback Red

Top: The Limited/Outback Red, Pants: Old Navy, Shoes: Missoni for Target

Did you know The Limited carries a brand called Outback Red? I was poking around one day and happened upon several really cute items with that label. I was curious, so I asked an associate what it was all about. According to her, it was a brand that is being brought back with styles that were popular around the 70s. How fun is that? Since my mom never really was into fashion, I had never heard of the brand before.

I am not sure if the quality is the same now as it was then, but I do know that this sweaterish top is fabulous and pretty nice quality. I call it sweaterish because it is knit like a sweater, but almost light enough to not be a sweater. Does that make sense? Either way, I love it.

S & N Update: Addition Walls and Roof

Walls are going up! This took Mr. M less than a week with only several workers to help. They are some great workers!

Stick built rafters. No trusses here.

The addition really suits the house rather nicely. It appears to have been something that would have been in the original plans when the house was built. I am very pleased with that, as is the homeowner! One of my biggest pet peeves when people add on to their homes is not considering their home's architecture and style. I have seen many additions that look like they just decided to slap something on and it stands out like a sore thumb. Yuck, yuck, and yuck!

Next steps: windows and doors, hvac and electric, fireplace installation, drywall and paint, and installation of floors (I think they're going hardwood). I am hoping Mr. M gets some great interior before and after photos! This is so exciting for S & N Construction! I'll keep you updated when there is more progress. Yay!

Fill In the Blank Friday

Yay! Another Fill In the Blank Friday! This is the last Friday before the craziness of the holiday season officially hits. I'll be joining a friend to go cheer on another friend in a half-marathon tomorrow. Tomorrow morning is supposed to be in the upper-20s, so I better bundle up!

1.  A nervous habit I have is - picking and rubbing my face! I will never end the battle with my face because I just can't seem to break the habit. So frustrating!

2.  Something that makes me sad is - how PC people feel they need to be around the holidays. I understand that some people don't celebrate Christmas or have their own religious holidays, and that's fine. But, it just seems lately that there is this huge uprising against wishing others a Merry Christmas for fear of something! I am proud to be a believer in Jesus Christ and will not inhibit myself in saying 'Merry Christmas' just because somebody thinks I shouldn't say it. We wouldn't have a Christmas without Christ anyway!

3.  Today I am thankful for - getting through a rather tough week! Physically and mentally!

4.  My favorite room in my house is - my living room. We don't have too many rooms in our house to begin with, but the living room is my favorite for several reasons. First, it's cozy. Second, it's the only room in the house that I feel is closest to being 'finished'. Therefore, I can relax.

5.  I can't stand - the sound of chewing.

6.  If I had an extra $100 to spend on whatever I wanted today I would - go out and buy a few Christmas gifts that I can't buy because they are over my gift budget.

7.  The last person I hung out with was - a dear, dear friend that is currently battling breast cancer. A rare form of it, no less. She just got done with chemo and has a few weeks of rest before she starts radiation. For somebody that is dealing with a ton of life stuff in addition to her battle with cancer, I really admire her for her incredible resilience and positive attitude!

Wear I Work - Plum Conservative

Dress:  Shade, Shoes: Aerosoles, Necklace: Premier Designs

This is an extremely conservative dress with a length that I am normally not comfortable with. But, after looking at this photo, it really is a good length for me since it hits at the narrowest part around my knee. When a skirt hits at the narrowest part like that, it gives the illusion of thinner, more shapely legs. It is definitely something to keep in mind when shopping for skirts!

I really need to get over worrying about my short legs and skirt lengths and just wear what I am happy with, and one of those things is this dress. It is incredibly comfortable and a great base to really go crazy with accessories. Obviously, I did not go crazy with the accessories on this day, but just imagine what you could do!

Here are some ideas:
  1. Add a contrasting belt to define your waist.
  2. Pop on a blazer or cardigan.
  3. Scarves are always fun. (I need to learn more about accessorizing with scarves.)
  4. Wear some hot booties and tights.
  5. Combine any of the above!
How would you wear a dress like this?

S & N Update: Addition Foundation!

There is finally movement on Mr. M's addition he is building! I don't think he realized how long the planning stages take for big projects and he was getting rather impatient. But, S & N Construction is now officially moving forward with this big project! Mr. M found a great subcontractor to pour the new foundation, somebody that Mr. M had no complaints about. That is a good thing since Mr. M is quite the perfectionist!

Here are a few progress photos in case you are interested in looking at some before pictures and some concrete. Please note that these photos were taken by Mr. M, so I really have no control what angles/quality we will get. Photography is not his forte, but I am still very excited to show some progress!

Before demolition.
After demolition with concrete forms ready.
Before foundation was poured. The existing slab was poured over and extended.

It's amazing how open it looks without that enclosed porch! Well, I am assuming it was a porch.

I can't wait to see how things look once walls are up! Stay tuned for more!

Wear I Work - Plaid Pappy Shoes

Top: Old Navy, Jeans: New York & Company, Shoes: Target

I usually don't go this casual for the blog, but I wanted to feature my plaid shoes. I don't wear them very often, which is surprising because they are super comfy. Maybe it's the plaid. Anyway, I call them my pappy shoes because they kind of remind me of the shoes my grandfather used to wear, and I called him Pappy. His shoes weren't plaid, though, although that would have been awesome.

Pappy always had great stories to tell and he loved to try to converse with me in German while I was taking German in high school and undergrad. He also loved to play his harmonica for us, although he only really played one or two songs. My brother and I were always supposed to guess what he'd play and it was always My Darling Clementine. We would giggle because it would always be the same thing and we always wondered if Pappy knew he always played the same thing for us every time we'd visit.

Wear I Work - Patterned Shoes

Top: Eddie Bauer, Sweater: New York & Company, Skirt: The Limited, Shoes: Pink Studio, Belt: Old Navy

I'm really not sure what I was going for with this look. I think I was trying the bold colored shoe look, but sadly, this is as bold as my shoe wardrobe gets when it comes to color. I am totally working on finding a fun, bright pair, but have not yet been successful.

I am a huge fan of a belt over a buttoned cardigan, so don't be surprised if you see more looks featuring that through these colder months. It is a great way to define your waist and visually lengthen your legs. And that's good for shorties like me!

Wear I Work - Pale, not Pail

Top: Ann Taylor, Sweater: The Limited, Jeans: New York & Company, Shoes: Rampage

This day was a pale color day. Not pail, as in a bucket. I don't think it would look too nice to wear a bucket. Unless you were some odd bucket wearing thing for Halloween.

This cardigan was bought with a matching tie, but I usually end up not using the tie part. I much rather it as a drape-style cardigan. Keeping your top simple with a pretty sweater and a string of pearls will instantly move your look from just casual to feminine and pretty casual.

Also, my shoes in the picture are actually grey booties, but I always wear them with pants because I feel they make my legs shorter than they need to be when paired with skirts. I'm tempted to buy some grey tights to try to work them in to my skirt wardrobe, but I'm not too sure I would like my legs looking grey. Anna did it so beautifully here, so she is probably the only reason why I would have hope for grey legs working for me.

Fill In the Blank Friday

Happy Friday! Blanky time is here! Come join in the fun!

1. My favorite thing about the week was/is - having the opportunity to contribute an important document to upper-management at work and having them respond with very nice comments and lots of '!'.

2. Colder weather makes me - want to snuggle up in lots of blankies and sip on hot coffee/chocolate.

3. Three things that make me terribly happy as of late are - Mr. M (but doesn't he always?), getting magazines in the mail, and thinking about all of the chances to spend time with family for the holidays.

4. If I could only wear one kind of shoe for the rest of my life, I'd choose - heels, but only if I did not have to deal with the consequences of wearing them all the time. Well, wait, maybe I'd change it to my favorite sneakers so I could still go running and feel fit. If I don't feel fit and exercise enough, everybody around me deals with the consequences. Hello, moody Nicole!

5. My personality type is - ISFJ. I am a
  • moderately expressed introvert
  • slightly expressed sensing personality
  • moderately expressed feeling personality
  • very expressed judging personality
Or, more thoroughly explained, and what seems to suit me rather well, is being a Protector, as explained here. And according to the Jung Career Indicator, it's nice to see that interior design would suit me well. That is one of my interests and somewhat of a dream job for me, although I have no idea where to start yet.

6. I have a serious problem resisting - anything snacky that is in the same room as me. And that is why I do not buy a lot of snacks and keep them in the house.

7. My favorite color to wear is - anything that is not the norm, like the yellow-green sweater I'm wearing right now or that weird baby poo yellowy-orange color.

Wear I Work - My First Pattern Mix

Top: Target, Sweater: Target, Jeans: New York & Company, Shoes: Lucky Brand

One thing I have always loved is how other people mix patterns so boldly and they always seem to work. For as long as I can remember, I have been afraid of mixing patterns for fear that I would look absolutely silly. This was my first attempt at mixing, and I believe I did a pretty decent job for my first go at it. Do you have fears of mixing patterns or are you a pattern mixing phenom?
